Hasta La Gadget!

While MSI has been teasing its Wind U123 and X-Slim X320 / X340 laptops for a little while now, we’ve yet to see the full specifications for each rig laid out. Until now, of course. Over at CTIA in Vegas, the company is revealing all the dirty details about what makes these May-bound rigs tick, and we’re pleased as punch to see a few unexpected inclusions. As for the 10.2-inch U123, you’ll find a 1.66GHz Atom N280 CPU, integrated WWAN and even a built-in TV tuner. As for the X-Slim X340 (starting around $1,000), it’s amongst the first to feature Intel’s newfangled CULV platform, which sucks down one-sixth the power of a regular mobile CPU. The X320 (starting at $700) gets gifted with a less exciting 1.6GHz Atom Z530, but the optional 3G / WiMAX module definitely makes it altogether enticing for those scouting a continually connected ultraportable. To be honest, netbooks scare me, but nettops scare me even more. Why do I need a neutered PC that isn’t portable? Well, at least the platform doesn’t need much power—even with a monitor.

The Wind Top AE1900 is an Atom 230-based system, supporting a max of 2GB of RAM on top of a 160GB hard drive, DVD burner, wireless n, card reader and webcam. But what makes it all exciting is the system’s 18.5-inch WSXGA 16:9 touch screen LCD, complete with a quick 5ms response time. You see, even with this much screen space, the computer needs only 45W to operate. And yes, that factoid is totally worth regurgitating my headline to reinforce that 45W is less than many light bulbs need.

As Rob at bbGadgets points out, “Now, I’m almost certain I had an Apple monitor that looked just like this about 7 years ago…” We’re pretty sure, too. The crazy thing is that this whole computer will cost thousand(s) less than that Apple Studio Display when it comes out to an undisclosed market at an undisclosed time. [MSI via bbGadgets]

While we’re confident you just woke up from the snore-fest that was MSI’s VX600 announcement from yesterday, we’ve got some entirely more exciting news from the outfit today. First off, there’s the 14.1-inch VR430, which comes loaded with an AMD Turion X2 dual-core CPU, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 GPU, up to 4GB of RAM, a 1,280 x 800 resolution panel, DVD writer, 4-in-1 card reader, WiFi, a six- or nine-cell battery, gigabit Ethernet, 1.3 megapixel webcam, ExpressCard slot and three USB 2.0 sockets. In other news, the Wind Nettop CS120 (known as the CD130 at CeBIT) is now shipping to US soil for a tantalizing $319.99. Tucked within it is a 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor, GMA950 graphics, up to 2GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, WiFi, oodles of ports and a slot-loading DVD burner. Despite the fact that MSI’s Atom-powered WindBOX is meant to ride your monitor while providing all the computing power it can handle, the employees at the company’s CeBIT booth felt it more proper in public to simply leave it laying out front. Though we were a touch dismayed, this choice did give us a better opportunity to shoot it from all angles, and we must say, this sucker is pretty thin. We’re still hearing that MSI is aiming this more at enterprise customers rather than mainstream consumers, but there’s nothing you can’t buy if you know the right channels.
