You’ve seen so many Kinect hacks by now that you probably think you know them all — but wait, have you seen one that makes you look like Predator when he’s busy predatorizing the populace? Or one that lets you reenact your favorite Metal Gear Solid scenes with Snake’s camo turned on? Yup, a Japanese coder by the name of Takayuki Fukatsu has exploited the versatile openFrameworks to give Kinect a mode where it tracks your movement and position, but turns the dull details of your visage into an almost perfectly transparent outline. Of course, you’re not actually transparent, it looks to be just the system skinning an image of the background onto the contours of your body in real time, but man, it sure is cool to look at. NC State and CMU develop velocity-sensing shoe radar, aim to improve indoor GPS routing

The world at large owes a good bit to Maxwell Smart, you know. Granted, it’s hard to directly link the faux shoe phone to the GPS-equipped kicks that are around today, but the lineage is certainly apparent. The only issue with GPS in your feet is how they react when you waltz indoors, which is to say, not at all. In the past, most routing apparatuses have used inertial measurement units (IMUs) to track motion, movement and distance once GPS reception is lost indoors, but those have proven poor at spotting the difference between a slow gait and an outright halt. Enter NC State and Carnegie Mellon University, who have worked in tandem in order to develop a prototype shoe radar that’s specifically designed to sense velocity. Within the shoe, a radar is attached to a diminutive navigational computer that “tracks the distance between your heel and the ground; if that distance doesn’t change within a given period of time, the navigation computer knows that your foot is stationary.” Hard to say when Nike will start testing these out in the cleats worn by football players, but after last week’s abomination of a spot (and subsequent botching of a review by one Ron Cherry) during the NC State – Maryland matchup, we’re hoping it’s sooner rather than later.

Caltech sues Nokia, LG, others over camera patents

Sure, your N8 might take a great picture — but is it about to become a hotbed of legal wrangling between Espoo and one of the more prolific research universities in the States? We love us some heady courtroom drama, and Pasadena’s Caltech is now officially attempting to bring the smack down on Nokia, LG, Pantech, Toshiba, STMicroelectronics, and others over a total of nine patents related to sensor technology (as far as we can tell, lens optics aren’t involved). For its troubles, the university wants unspecified damages for infringing on the intellectual property… which, if it wins, we’re hoping will be poured into its Jet Propulsion Laboratory. You know, because rockets are awesome.

Affectiva’s Q Sensor wristband monitors and logs stress levels, might bring back the snap bracelet

Credit to Affectiva — for a medical bracelet, the Q Sensor looks delightful. The item you’re peering at here has been developed by the aforesaid Massachusetts-based startup in order to give a voice to those who may not have one, and in theory, it can provide vital information to caregivers long before a breakdown takes place. Particularly with autistic children, who often cannot communicate their stress levels effectively, the Q Sensor is able to “detect and record physiological signs of stress and excitement by measuring slight electrical changes in the skin.” From there, it can send signals to doctors, parents or caregivers, and those folks can react accordingly to information that they would otherwise not be privy to. Put simply, the band works by detecting subtle moisture changes under the skin when the “flight or fight” mode is initiated, and while even the creators admit that such a response isn’t absolutely indicative of stress, it’s generally a signal worth paying attention to for one reason or another. Purportedly, a beta version is set to go on sale to researchers and educators later this month for $2,000, and there’s a video just after the break if you’re still struggling to grok the purpose.

Murata’s fatigue sensor demoed, coming soon to mobiles and handhelds near you

Need further confirmation that an IV drip of 5-Hour Energy is what your body really needs? Look no further than Murata’s newfangled fatigue sensor. Demonstrated at CEATEC in front of thousands of jetlagged Americans, Europeans, Easter Islanders and Samoans, this compact device is built by “integrating a photoplethysmographic sensor, which measures a pulse and a blood oxygen saturation level, and electrodes that measure electrocardiogram (ECG).” We’re told that the unit measures a fatigue degree (reported on a 1 to 100 scale) based on the “pulse, blood oxygen saturation level and electrocardiogram measured by the sensing parts,” and while we’re guessing the prototype will have to shrink significantly before it happens, the company seems focused on cramming this thing into cellphones and portable game consoles of the future.You know — so Nintendo actually can know when you need to lay down the gaming and step outside for a bit.

Sony outs world’s first 16.41 megapixel cellphone sensor

Uh, wow, guess the megapixel race isn’t over. Sony just announced the world’s first 16.41 megapixel CMOS sensor for mobile phones putting today’s 12 megapixel units to shame. The 1/2.8-inch back-illuminated Exmor R model IMX081PQ sensor packs an industry smallest 1.12μm unit cell size and is capable of shooting 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps. Sony claims to have solved some of the issues related to those incredibly small pixel sizes by implementing a unique formation of photo diodes to achieve a sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity, and low noise. Expect it to begin sampling in January 2011 for ¥2,500 (about $30) per or ¥12,000 (about $145) when packaged with a 10.5 x 10.5 x 7.9 mm IU081F autofocus lens module that ships in March — prices that will come down dramatically when purchased in bulk. A second, 1/3.2-inch 8.13 megapixel IMX105PQ sensor with IU105F2 lens module (pictured on the right) will be out in April for a lot less.

NC State patents multifunctional smart sensors, looks to ‘revolutionize energy and communications infrastructure’

Bold words coming from a program that choked in epic fashion this past Saturday in front of 58,000+, don’t you think? Thankfully for those who are actually involved in the global energy and communications infrastructure (not to mention depressed alumni), NC State‘s athletics department is far removed from its research labs, and the university’s latest development was born and bred in the latter. A team of researchers have managed to patent a new technology that is expected to enable the development of “high-power, high-voltage and high-current devices that are critical for the development of energy distribution devices, such as smart grid technology and high-frequency military communications.” The secret? Integrating gallium nitride (GaN) sensors and devices directly into silicon-based computer chips, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by any team prior. According to Dr. Jay Narayan, this newfangled integration has “enabled the creation of multifunctional smart sensors, high-electron mobility transistors, high-power devices, and high-voltage switches for smart grids,” and it also makes a broader range of radio frequencies available — something that’ll obviously be beneficial in the advancement of communications. Best of all, a US-based corporation is already in the process of licensing the technology, so it’s likely that we’ll see this in use in the not-too-distant future. An ACC championship, however, remains far more elusive.

Recon-Zeal Transcend goggles now shipping, GPS and head-mounted display included

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? If you’ll recall, we heard that Recon Instruments was fixing to up-end the winter sports goggle market in February of this year, with an optimistic-at-the-time ship date of October 2010. Lo and behold, the outfit has managed to nail its estimate, and the planet’s first GPS-enabled goggles are now available to highfalutin’ skiers and snowboarders. At least initially, the company will be rolling out a limited set, with two models to choose from: the $499 Transcend SPPX is fitted with an SPPX polarized and photochromic lens, while the $399 Transcend SPX features an SPX polarized lens. Aside from the fact that these probably cost less than those ho hum Oakleys in the ski shop, they’re equipped with a Zeal Optics’ frame design with a micro LCD display, which appears to hang approximately six feet in front of the user. That head-mounted display provides real-time feedback to the wearer, including speed, latitude / longitude, altitude, vertical distance traveled, total distance traveled, a chrono / stopwatch mode, a run-counter, temperature and time. Yeah, wow. You can bet we’ll be trying to snag a set for review when we do our best impression of “hitting the slopes” post-CES.

Sony outsourcing some image sensor production to Fujitsu

Whoa. Sony sure didn’t mention anything about this at its Photokina press conference last week, but then again, it’s not the most glamorous announcement to make. According to Reuters, Sony is aiming to “outsource some production of image sensors used in digital cameras and mobile phones to Fujitsu,” and as you’d expect, it’s being done in a bid to shave costs and “cope with tough global competition.” According to a Sony spokesperson, the company has been mulling this decision for awhile, but it’s unclear if this will have any further impact in Sony’s employment numbers. It’s also unclear why “some” sensor production will remain internal — we’re guessing that newfangled Translucent Mirror technology may have convinced the firm to keep the DSLR lines a bit closer to the chest. It’s bruited that Sony will begin subcontracting output to Fujitsu later in the year, and it could shift even more output if things go swimmingly. Funny enough, an eerily similar scenario hit Sony’s LCD department back in early 2008. What’s next? Subcontracting Walkman production to Apple?

Volvo pedestrian avoidance test goes horribly, comically wrong (video)

Hey, can’t fault ’em for trying! Volvo, which is widely recognized as one of the safer automakers on the planet, is apparently developing a new pedestrian avoidance system for its motorcars. The concept is pretty simple — if your car senses a human in the way of its path, it’s supposed to alert you, suggest you brake and generally help you avoid tacking a hit ‘n run onto your already impressive rap sheet. As you’ll so clearly see in the video embedded after the break, there’s a reason the automobile industry relies on dummies for crash testing. For what it’s worth, the test was successful the majority of the time, with this particular snafu blamed on improper placement of said dummy. Of course, we certainly hope no one at Volvo expects “improper placement of a human” to excuse the system once implemented in the real world…
